The idea of getting out on the road may seem stressful to new campers, so we compiled a list of things we think any new RV’er may need to know for their first few times out. Campgrounds and their sites come in all different shapes and sizes. Some remain more primitive with virtually no outside resources provided, where as others will have running drinking water, bathhouses, picnic tables, boat ramps, concrete pads and other amenities, so its important to be prepared for your stay.
Gear
The main essentials are extension cords and surge protectors, tarps, leveling blocks, wheel chocks, drinking and gray water hoses, firewood and fuel, first-aid kit, outdoor lighting, and flashlights. For an overall easier living experience consider extra bedding, pots & plates, cups and utensils, trash bags, campfire chairs, cooler, picnic tablecloth, and an outdoor rug or doormat. Meal Plans
Most campers have the luxury of both a stove and oven, but you also have the campfire that can be used to cook a wide variety of meals. Most campers also have a fridge but any cooler can also be used to keep food/drink fresh and cool when away from your site. Consider where you’ll be when meal time comes around. Maybe that’s out on the water on a boat somewhere. An easy meal like pre-made sandwiches and chips & dip might be the way to go. Where back at the site, fire roasted veggies and a good juicy burger cooked on the flame might just be what you need to end your busy day. Don’t forget about S’mores for dessert! Critters like raccoons and bears tend to come around at night in search of any food scraps you may have left out and around your site so, make sure to seal everything up inside your camper or vehicle at night. Packing the right clothing is crucial for you to stay comfortable on your trip. Never fully trust the forecast, always pack for the unexpected. If the forecast says rain, consider water repellent garments and lots of layers. If long sunny days are expected, bring a hat, sunglasses, and long breathable sleeved shirts and pants to protect your skin from the harsh rays. For the chiller nights, bring a warm jacket/coat, lots of layers, gloves, beanie and thick wool socks. Shoes are also very important. You want to protect your feet from the elements so be cautious of open towed shoes and slip ons.
Toiletries
Camping requires you to spend a good chuck of your day outside, so it’s important to protect yourself from the elements. Things like bug spray, sunscreen, a first aid kit, hygiene products (toothbrush, deodorant, body wash, medication), hand/dish soap, RV safe toilet paper and paper towels will be crucial for your stay.
Where to camp
There are thousands of places to camp from coast to coast. Depending on what your camping with, there may be some restrictions to your stay. With any campground its a good idea to call ahead or look online for check in/ check out times, what amenities they offer, and the surrounding location for shops and gas. There are amazing resources out there when it comes to finding the perfect campground; one of our favorites is Go Camping America a part of GoRving. Go Camping America allows RVers and outdoor enthusiasts to pinpoint their exact needs and compare parks along their route. Here you can find a campground in any state. It will tell you the best places to camp in the state with a nice description of what they offer, things to do, any featured parks, and frequently asked questions about the area. LINKS TO SITES
